Corsair Expeditions

João, a mechanical engineer with a deep passion for the sea, is also a certified Ocean Skipper (Patrão de Alto Mar), holding a maritime license and recognized as a sailing coach by the Portuguese Sailing Federation. Driven by this passion and extensive knowledge, I founded Corsair Expeditions, a company dedicated to providing unique sailing experiences for tourists and enthusiasts eager to explore the sea and learn the art of sailing.

Corsair Expeditions is based along the picturesque banks of the Tagus River in Portugal, offering exciting sailing adventures that allow guests to take in the stunning beauty of Lisbon’s waters while gaining practical insights into navigation and sailing techniques.

With my background in mechanical engineering, I ensure the safety and proper maintenance of our boats, allowing our clients to enjoy a smooth and worry-free experience. Additionally, my qualifications as an Ocean Skipper and knowledge of maritime regulations, such as the STCW (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), enable me to lead expeditions professionally and responsibly.

As a certified sailing instructor by the Portuguese Sailing Federation, I am well-equipped to teach students of all levels, from beginners to advanced sailors. Our lessons are a blend of theoretical and hands-on practice, tailored to each student's abilities and goals, ensuring they gain confidence and skills on the water.

Sailing is an activity that perfectly combines adventure, relaxation, and a deep connection with nature. It's an incredible way to disconnect from modern life and immerse oneself in the maritime environment. Through Corsair Expeditions, my goal is to create unforgettable moments for our clients, allowing them to experience the magic of sailing while exploring the tranquil waters of the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're seeking a unique experience at sea, whether it's a relaxing sail or an opportunity to learn how to navigate, Corsair Expeditions is ready to welcome you. Join us for an exciting journey into the world of sailing.

Meet Ithaca

The ITHACA is a beautiful example of the Westerly Conway 36, a classic ketch sailboat built in 1979. Designed by the renowned British shipyard Westerly Yachts, the Conway 36 is celebrated for its sturdiness and reliability, essential qualities for both coastal cruising and offshore sailing. A ketch is a sail configuration with two masts—the main mast forward and a smaller mizzen mast aft—offering excellent balance and control, especially in stronger winds.

At 36 feet in length (11 meters), Ithaca provides stable and comfortable sailing, ideal for gliding through the calm waters of the Tagus River or handling the more challenging Atlantic breezes. Its timeless and elegant design blends tradition with performance, making it perfect for both experienced sailors and beginners.

Key features of Ithaca:

  • Type: Ketch

  • Length: 36 feet (approximately 11 meters)

  • Year built: 1979

  • Builder: Westerly Yachts, United Kingdom

  • Displacement: Approximately 7.5 tons, ensuring stability in various sea conditions.

  • Hull material: Reinforced fiberglass, offering durability and safety.

  • Sails: Equipped with mainsail, mizzen, and a genoa, providing flexibility for different wind conditions.

  • Cozy interior: The interior is spacious and comfortable, with wooden finishes and a layout that includes a functional galley, a comfortable seating area, and cabins for resting, perfect for cruises lasting several hours or days.

The Ithaca is not just a sailboat; it’s a piece of nautical history. Named after the poem “Ithaca” by Constantine Cavafy, it embodies the spirit of journeys that go beyond the destination, focusing on the experience, adventure, and learning. With its classic elegance and reliable performance, Ithaca offers a unique and authentic sailing experience in Lisbon.

Sailing aboard the Ithaca is like traveling back in time—enjoying the art of traditional sailing and connecting with the sea in a way that few modern boats can offer.

ITHACA

by Constantine Cavafy

As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don't be afraid of them:
you'll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won't encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

May there be many a summer morning when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
the sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to gather stores of knowledge from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her, you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won't have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.
